The owners of this modest Tudor home wanted to open up their home to the lovely outdoor surroundings. I suggested removing a wall between two small bedrooms to create one large master bedroom which overlooks the walled-in courtyard at the back of the house. The owners allowed me to use color throughout the home to express a sense of happy whimsy. An example of this is the perky orange and white patterned wallpaper that was installed on one living room wall which was used to enliven the three black and white French engravings of garden urns that I found and had framed. Other examples are seen in the purposely mismatched fabrics on the custom dining chair cushions, the combination of charcoal-grey grasscloth and apple-green sofa in the husband’s study or the silver bouquet-printed wallpaper and bright pink large-scale photograph used in the guest bathroom. I also outfitted the courtyard at the back of the house with handsome outdoor furniture, fabrics in soothing earth tones, outdoor lamps and a burbling fountain, which turned this area into a peaceful outdoor living room.
